Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
